Ubisoft developed the Dunia Engine specifically for Far Cry 2. Among other things, the Dunia Engine delivers realistic, interactive environments, special effects, real-time night-and-day cycles, and smart enemy AI.
Expansive, Realistic Environment
Far Cry 2 is set in a fictional region of Africa where you are caught between two rival factions at war. The Ubisoft team spent a lot of time filming and photographing in Africa to get all the details of the landscape and native wildlife. The result is a huge gameplay area that is 50 square kilometers, taking players into and out of the jungle and savannah. Wild animals such as zebras, buffalo, gazelle are encountered during the game, with both players and enemies allowed to interact with them.
Far Cry 2 features an incredible level of detail and realism, with a minimal in-game interface to detract from immersion. For example, players will need to navigate the world using an in-game map and navigation system, weapons will disintegrate over time, and fires will spread and propagate.
Each of the actions a player takes is reflected in the environment and changes the content of the game. To fulfill your mission, you need to play the enemies against each other, using both strategy and skill.
Huge Range of Weapons and Vehicles
Far Cry 2 offers gamers a wide range of weapons, from a machete for hand-to-hand combat, to a sniper rifle that can stealthily pluck off enemies from afar. As weapons disintegrate over time, they might jam or even explode in your hand.
There are also a large range of vehicles such as gliders, trucks, cars, and boats that will let you fly, drive, slide, and hover over the open landscapes.
Multiplayer Options for up to 16 Players
Far Cry 2 supports up to 16 players and has four gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Uprising. Players can choose from six different classes in multiplayer, each with its own set of pros and cons. Just as in the single-player mode, multiplayer games will feature dynamic elements, making each session unique.
You can explore the world of Far Cry 2 from inside a car or flying on a glider.
92% done, but game now freezes upon loading ANY game save. LAME (2008-11-09)
PROS:
- incredible visuals, incredible fire effects
- character animation is good
- great sound, great score
- nice selection of weapons
CONS:
- Camo seems to do nothing or not much
- Living dead. Clear a place of enemies? they respawn forever.
- incredibly repetitive. go here, kill this guy
- your character is from the special olympics, he can barely jump, running makes him tired immediately
- enemy AI is an expert, even on Easy. They can run, shoot and hit you you at the same time. sometimes it takes unloading an entire clip to take one down
- BUGS. the key bring down of this game is that i cannot complete it. it has frozen on me a few times before. but now i'm 92% complete and i was on my way to save the journalist guy at the airport. i got killed and it froze on reload. now i cannot reload any game saves whatsoever...lame
Solid Game (2008-11-06)
Far Cry 2 does not rely heavily on variance. The game never really changes difficulty, pace, or what it relies on to be a good game. Which is okay most all of the time in this one. The game is definately either a love or hate to me. There were many features I either thought were neat or I thought they were absolutely dumb and broken. The graphics are very hit and miss, so is the sound. The story mode had good legnth, the game runs for around 10 hours. So I would say if you enjoy first person shooters or open-world gameplay, give it a try I dont think you will be disappointed.

Um, HELLO! (2008-11-04)
The graphics in this game are outstanding. The gameplay is great. It's a lot of fun, period! What do people expect and or want anymore? I can't understand why I am seeing so many negative reviews towards this game. Just play it. One reason this game deserves more positive reviews is for the length. Almost the vast majortity of games that come out now are usually way to short, there's never enough packed into the single player campaign anymore. Most games are geared towards multiplayer and don't make a decent single player experience. I like this game not only because it is long, but it's actually fun to play and the multiplayer part is very well executed as well ( you get to create and edit youre own maps, from scratch ). The map editor is like having a another game completely. The single-player campaign is lot's of fun because there is a certain strategy involved. I like thinking things out in a game and being able to choose how I want to approach a certain scenario and from any direction. You can go balls out or sneak around, it's youre choice. The entire map in the single-player campaign is about 20 + square miles in length, probably more. You can do almost whatever you want, swim, walk, run, drive, boat, hang-glide and I'm sure much, much more. All of youre weapons are upgradeable as well. I just don't understand how so many are trashing on this game. I am thoroughly impressed.
I won't be finishing this one (2008-11-01)
If this game didn't have so much promise, its flaws wouldn't stand out so much. The graphics look great. I was impressed by the size and scope of the game. I didn't mind the long treks between missions; got to see more of the graphics. But, it's a first person shooter and the shooting sucks.
It's very difficult to find targets at night. Often times, I couldn't tell enemy from foliage until it fired a gun at me. I found it difficult to tell what direction gunfire was coming from. There's the standard FPS graphic that's supposed to indicate the direction the gunfire's coming from. But, unlike other games where I'd quickly become familiar with the system, I never found this one useful.
The amount of gun fire the enemies can withstand had me laughing out loud. One enemy, after being thrown through the air by an exploding barrel, got up, circled around me, while I strafed him with machine gun fire from atop my Jeep, hopped on a another Jeep turret and opened fire. I turned, and we were, literally, bumper to bumper, turret to turret, absolutely plastering each other with bullets until he finally died. That was funny. It's just annoying when fighting multiple enemies and you have to pump an inordinate amount of ammo into each one just to make sure they're dead.
The respawning enemies are plain stupid. You have to fight through a crossroads or guard post going in and coming out. Maybe the next day, but half an hour later? I'm fighting the same guys, same t-shirts, oh, and look, they set up the same exploding barrel. They have the same jeeps, too. Awesome.
Stealth you ask? Uh... maybe. I never could tell when I was being "stealthy". I'm crouched, creeping through the shadows and enemies seemed to detect me whether I fired a gun or not. And DO NOT use the machete. The thing must make a high pitched sound that everyone on the planet but you can hear.
The final deal breaker came when I "rescued a buddy". After administering first aid to my companion I was forced to watch an unbreakable animation of helping her up during which I was shot repeatedly. I regained control of my character in time to watch myself die. I loathe running across game play elements whose only possible explanation for existence is the developer's failure to thoroughly test the game in the first place.
Bottom line, a horribly misguided attempt to add too much realism to the combat and a way out of place diablo-esque respawning system completely ruined this game for me.
It could have been much better (2008-10-31)
Far Cry 2 does not have anything in the least to do with the first Far Cry, which is okay but worth mentioning. This game isn't perfect, but none are, and it won't appeal to everyone. It is very realistic in its approach to combat, no crosshairs, weapon malfunctions, realistic load times and procedures, all great. The variety of weapons is nice, as are the possible uses.
A small note on weapon malfunctions and jams. You will often get weapon malfunctions when using enemy pick ups. I have seen it described as being unrealistic that an AK would jam, malfunction or destroy themselves after a few hundred round. Many of the weapons used by such groups in Africa have been used, carried, and abused for years and many thousands of rounds already. I have seen a large number of bent, broken and otherwise unhealthy small arms in several African counties. AKs, G3s, and FALs are amazingly rugged and reliable weapons but they are machines and with too much use and abuse they do fail.
The physics are quite nice, and its really nice to watch a fire you start burn its way across the plains. The shadows and lighting is great, but can be distracting. It is often times hard to find enemies shooting at you with the huge amount of shadows drifting about. Which again is fairly realistic, but will annoy players who are use to having little red dots to tell them where to shoot. The detail on the weapons themselves is also nice, though the designers have mirrored several of the models. I think they did this to add more detail and action to the weapons themselves. All of the weapons in the game have their bolts on the right and would eject that way. Not a bit deal but something that takes away from the illusion, at least for me.
The enemies are normally pretty smart (annoyingly so at times) and will try to take advantage of numbers and flanking, and usually even cover. Its not perfect but they offer a challenge, though a number of them seem to have eagle vision and have gone to several sniper schools before returning home to Africa to fight. By which I mean they are very good at hitting you with rifle fire from several hundred yards away, through cover and while running. The enemies in technicals also have an annoying habit of creeping up on you before unloading a light machine gun into your back.
There are two things that very much take away from the game in my opinion. The vehicles are a bit annoying but needed, driving is handled poorly and its hard to see where you are going often. A lot of the missions seems to require you to get in your car, drive across four maps, hit your target and then come back. During that trip though you will constantly be under fire from every person in the whole area. Every check point, every dock, every road, random people will be there to shoot at you. When you factor in the enemies ability to make remarkable shots and take massive amounts of damage, its gets old fast. The difficult levels are pretty out of whack. Easy may mean it is the easiest setting in this game, but it by means easy to play through. The story is rather lacking, though realistic, its sparse. Which suits the game well enough.
Another annoyance is that you contract malaria as soon as the game begins. Why anyone would go to Africa without getting their Doxycycline out of the way first is dumb. Your main character could also be in a bit better shape, getting blurry eyed and wheezy after even a short sprint. I suppose this can be forgiven since he apparently does have malaria after all. Small gripes for me but ones I am willing to live with.
I recommend this game as a rental, but if you turn out to enjoy it and not mind the short comings then pick it up. There is nothing worse than to drop your hard earned cash on a game to find it annoys you to no end. Plenty of shooting, burning and explosions, how could you go wrong? Be sure you are willing to deal with the annoyances and often dying.
(UPDATE) After several days of play I have to say I am getting utterly sick of the totally tedious nature of this game. The endless amounts of driving to get a mission done, just to drive across the entire map again and get another one is unnecessary. It is true there is a 'bus system' but you still have to travel from the stations to your targets. Add to this fact that from getting your mission and getting to your target sight you will get in at least five gun fights is ridiculous. Then when this is added to the save system and the rebels later heavy armament, you waste a huge amount of time to accomplish nothing. I have to move my recommendation to a rental on this one, if at all. Too bad though, there is a lot of promise in this title.
